This model was constructed with the curious child in mind who is interested in understanding how the spine works. Constructed with a viscoelastic annulus and nucleus, an added feature of a smiley face is within the nucleus to show internal movement. A small tiny tear is also represented within the inner annulus to show that annular fissures can occur in a young spine. This model can be helpful in the teaching of early principles of lifting mechanics before bad habits set in.
Inspired from the research of degenerative disc disease can begin as early as the first decade of life; discussed in the Natural History of the Aging Spine.
