This type 3a lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV)1 has been carefully crafted to demonstrate a L4-sacrum dynamic disc and the affected facet joints. An annular puncture is included to show disc herniation (extrusion) under load. Stand included. Please allow 4-5 weeks to create.

Explore the fascinating world of Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebrae (LSTV) in this video, featuring a detailed herniation model by Dynamic Disc Designs. LSTV are congenital spinal anomalies characterized by the fusion of the elongated transverse process of the last lumbar vertebra with varying degrees of the first sacral segment.

This morphological variation spans a spectrum, ranging from partial or complete L5 sacralization (in this model’s case) to partial or complete S1 lumbarization. When L5 completely fuses with the sacrum, it results in the presence of four lumbar vertebrae. Conversely, when S1 separates entirely from the sacrum, there are six lumbar vertebrae, leading to a more pronounced lordotic curvature in the spine.

In addition to these extreme variations, there are numerous intermediate incomplete transitions recognized and classified as LSTV. Use this model to educate the intricacies of this intriguing spinal anomaly and its impact on spinal health.
